The Economic Policies of the Marquis of Pombal: The Case of Porto Santo

Abstract

In the context of the Enlightenment mentality he had profiled, the Marquis of Pombal introduced profound changes in the economic orientation of the kingdom and the empire, among which are some that concerned Madeira and, in particular, Porto Santo.
What this communication proposes is precisely a closer look at the economic situation of Porto Santo in times of the very Pombaline Governor João António de Sá Pereira and, at the same time, to assess the degree of innovation of these measures.
