Abstract

This article analyzes the Madeiran migration to the overseas provinces of Angola and Mozambique, between 1940 and 1974, not only from a regional perspective, but also, in parallel with the analysis of the phenomenon at national level, pointing out the existence of similarities and asymmetries between the two cases.
Multidisciplinary analysis is privileged, through the use of different areas of knowledge, namely sociology, demography and history.
This work resulted in the characterization of these flows in statistical, demographic and social terms. Additionally, it was possible to observe that migration to the overseas provinces was less expressive in Madeira than that which occurred on the Portuguese mainland, and, above all, much smaller than that registered abroad.
