Manuel Luiz Vieira: A Life Dedicated to Image (1920-1952)
Abstract
Manuel Luiz Vieira, born in Madeira in the 19th century, was one of the pioneers of Portuguese cinema. He started with small experiments, was associated with the creation of the first two film companies on the island and became one of the main operators of the Estado Novo, integrating the Cinematographic Mission to the African Colonies and the General Management of Agricultural Services.
His name is associated with more than 200 films, as director, image operator or producer. A discrete person, Manuel Luiz Vieira is an (almost) unknown in the cultural and academic sphere. Thus, this paper aims to contribute to a greater knowledge of his biography and his filmography, as well as to collaborate in the making of the History of Cinema in Madeira.
