Abstract

This contribution presents the artistic view of Mildred Cossart (1879-1966) on the landscapes of the Madeira Archipelago in the first decade of the 20th century in its historical, literary and pictorial context. Beyond its aesthetic, geographical and historical value, the representation of the Archipelago’s landscape and inhabitants on the photographs of the colonial period will be analysed for its symbolic appropriation: a gesture that continues in the pictorial turistification of the insular space.
