The Betencourt Perestrelo de Vasconcelos and their Family Archive

Abstract

The Archipelago of Madeira was (re)discovered 600 years ago. This paper presents a brief history of the Betencourt Perestrelo de Vasconcelos, who are among the numerous descendants of the settler and first captain of Porto Santo, Bartolomeu Perestrelo. It also provides the reader with information on their family archive, which is now preserved in the Madeira Regional Archive and Public Library.
