The Beginnings of the Leme Family in Madeira (15th-16th Centuries)
Abstract
This article intends to situate in space and time the Leme family, descendant from Martim Leme, a native of Bruges, established in Portugal in the middle of the 15th century, undoing, in the light of the documentation already known, a series of mistakes that were created around them.
It also intends to follow the course of the first three generations of Lemes on the island of Madeira, from the arrival of António Leme to Funchal, in the last quarter of the 15th century, until the end of the 16th century, expressly referring to the strict settlement (morgado) founded in 1552 by Pedro Leme.
