History of Education in Porto Moniz: The Origins of Primary Schooling (1838-1878)
Abstract
The history of primary education in the municipality of Porto Moniz, in the island of Madeira, reveals a slow trajectory marked by structural difficulties throughout the 19th century. Between the establishment of the first school in 1838 and the late 1800s reforms, local schooling was negatively impacted by administrative instability, limited financial resources, and geographical isolation. Based on the analysis of municipal records, inspection reports, and statistical data, it is possible to piece together the main aspects of this process: the establishment of the first schools, the precarious material conditions, the low attendance rates, and the early efforts towards female education. The case of Porto Moniz exemplifies the challenges faced by peripheral municipalities in implementing liberal education policies. By gathering dispersed information and highlighting this local reality, the study contributes to the appreciation of Madeira’s educational memory and paves the way for future comparative research with other insular and continental contexts.
