Abstract

The present work aims to demonstrate the value and importance of private archives and how the intention of preserving memory is increasingly present in our society. As a case study, the João de Freitas Martins Archive is approached, a company still in activity, with information that covers the 19^th and 20^th centuries, and which is in deposit at Arquivo e Biblioteca da Madeira (Madeira Archives and Library).
