Abstract

Since the expansion of fado beyond Lisbon in the late 19th century, this musical genre has influenced other areas along the Atlantic route, including the Madeira Archipelago. This article aims to present Madeira’s place in the history of fado, exploring the main stages, relevant musicians, cultivated repertoire, and spaces where the genre was a protagonist. In doing so, it seeks to contribute to demonstrate that Madeira is also part of the history of fado and its dissemination beyond mainland Portugal.
